EVERYDAY WELL patient PORTAL
Making it convenient to manage your health
Everyday Well is a digital health service platform by Memorial Hermann offering convenient access to healthcare resources such as appointment scheduling, online bill payment, and health records. The platform aims to streamline healthcare management for patients through a user-friendly interface.
Timeline
The MVP launch was within 6 months, despite some technical stumbles along the way in working with our our EHR and portal platform vendor Cerner at the time.
Background
I was brought onto the Memorial Hermann team to join an entirely new full stack group of talented individuals to take on deploying MH's first patient portal. A large portion of onboarding was learning the best ways to work together and to discover each other's talents and skills along the way. The technical underpinnings of the portal were carried out by Cerner, so there was a great need to align and communicate closely with their teams in Kansas City to guarantee our collaboration would be a success.
Our digital team of 15 worked together with different entities of Memorial Hermann, including partnering with Marketing, and later the Cerner technical teams closer to MVP launch. Work was carried out through 1-month long agile development sprints.
Research & Planning
I utilized existing patient research and feedback from hospital staff collected before I joined the team to understand general sentiments on the needs of a patient portal. This helped me identify areas where I could enhance the user experience across different parts of the app and website. Additionally, I reviewed extensive technical documentation from Cerner to envision how the components and framework could integrate into a cohesive platform.
Design & Prototyping
I created user flows, iterative wireframes, and high-fidelity comps, and conducted review sessions with our internal team for feedback during design sprints. Additionally, I met regularly with the Marketing team to review progress and discuss upcoming features to ensure alignment with business needs.
Testing & Implementation
On the Everyday Well team, I collaborated directly with our QA team and front-end developers to address any UI bugs that emerged during UAT.
Due to the unique nature of our technical solution—where our team built portions of the portal while other areas used i-frames to integrate with Cerner's presentations—there were some execution limitations that affected the overall impact of the portal. Memorial Hermann has since transitioned to a different EHR (Epic) and changed the infrastructure of the app and website. Below are the features I directly contributed to designing the user experience for:
Find a Doctor
Search through thousands of doctors to find one that fits your needs. Easily make an appointment that accommodates your schedule and location.
Schedule an Apppointment
Book an appointment and check for same-day availability. You can also view the details of your upcoming appointments, ensuring you stay informed and prepared.
ID Card on Your Phone
Access your Memorial Hermann Health Plan ID Card from any device, right when you need it. View insurance plan details specific for you and your family.
Deductible Tracker
Monitor your deductibles effortlessly and tracks your and your family's deductible balances, keeping you up-to-date and informed.
View Insurance Claims
Easily access and review your past insurance claims, providing you with a comprehensive history of your claims for better management and peace of mind.
Following my departure from Memorial Hermann, technical discussions continued regarding the optimal infrastructure for Everyday Well. We successfully launched the MVP for the web, though the wrapper app remained under consideration. I am immensely proud of our accomplishments and how effectively our new team collaborated cross-functionally to achieve our business objectives at the time.
